A BEDROOM CEREMONY.

SPEAKER SWORN IN. GOVERNOR-GENERAL INDISPOSED. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. To-day's unusual development, arising through the indisposition* of the Governor-General, has never previously occurred in connection with the opening of the New Zealand Parliament, though it is well known that similar situations have arisen in England, and that there have been occasions when the late Queen Victoria, although able to attend the House of Lords for the opening of Parliament, has commanded the Lord Chancellor to read the Speech from the Throne. Sir Charles Fergusson's sudden indisposition threatened to create a constitutional difficulty this morning, for the Speake of the House must first be submitted for the approval of the King's representative before he can take office. In accordance with custom, therefore, the proposer and seconder of Mr. Statham for the Speakership proceeded to Government House to-day to submit the choice of the House for the Governor-General's approval. They were accompanied by Mr. Tapley (representing the Government party), Mr. Mason (Eden) for the Labour party, and Mr. Ransom (Nationalist). His Excellency had found himself unable to leave his bedroom because of a sharp attack of lumbago, but it was essential to get his approval to the Speaker; therefore the little ceremony necessary under constitutional procedure had to -.Jike place in the Governor-General's bedroom.
