In the Southern qualifying section for 40 places in the open golf championship, the first round is being- played to-day, and the second round will be played tomorrow. To-day's scores included: Compston 60, (iadd and Kirkwood 71, Josh Taylor and Mitchell 7:2, Ray and J. K. Taylor 7:5, Popplewell (Australia) and Havers 74, Duncan, Braid and R. H. Whitcombe 75. Melhorn 70, Carnegie Clark 80. The Central section is playing for 42 places. The leaders are: Hagen, Watts and Giinn 72, Reiiouf and Armour 74, Barnes 7">. Boomer 7(i. In llio Northern section ten places are to be decided, and the leaders are: Wilson (Scottish chamnion) li, Gordon and Lockliart 73.—(A. and N.Z.) In the southern section Bobby Jones, with a round of 00, leads the iield, his score being a record for the course. Robson went round in OS), and Yon Elm in 74. Central section. J.
