BRITISH VESSEL AGROUND.
S.S. CITY OF NAPLES. SOME OF THE CREW SAVED. TOKYO. June 10. The British cargo steamer City of Naples, bound to Yokohama from Kobe with a cargo of steel, struck a submerged coral reef in a storm. The Japanese steamer Chefoo Maru picked up her S.O.S. call while she was taking refuge from the storm, and went to the help of the disabled vessel. The City of Naples is half submerged, and is perched perilously on the reef. While the Chefoo Maru and the Japanese destroyer Urakaza were standing by, and although mountainous seas prevented effective rescue work, the Ohefoo Maru picked up 15 of the crow who had escaped in a lifeboat. The remaining members of the creware still unaccounted for, The latest wireless message from the Chefoo Maru reports that only eight or nine men were seen on the deck of the City of Naples. It was feared the remainder, including the captain, had been swept off in the night. Attempts at rescue were being continued, but' were difficult owing to the high seas. The Urakaza later reported, however, that a group of nearly 50 men had been sighted astern. The chance of rescuing them was.regarded hopefully as the wind was subsiding.—(Renter.) The City of Naples is a steel screw steamer of 5730 tons gross register titted for oil fuel. She was built in 1008 by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., at Newcastle, for the Ellerman Lines, Ltd. Her port of regjstry is Liverpool. The Chefoo Maru is a steel screw steamer of 1820 tons belonging to the Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaislia of Tokyo.
