BEEF CATTLE.
HEREFORD BREEDERS MEET. ENCOURAGING PROSPECTS. (By Telegraph.-Tress Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Wednesday. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Hereford Breeders' Association was held to-day, Mr. Gregor McGregor of Wanganuj, presiding. The president stated that the typ« and character of the Hereford breed represented throughout all the leading herds in the Dominion constituted a national asset and gave confidence and encouragement to all who had invested in this class of cattle. The increase in the consumption of beef over other meats was most noticeable and was commented upon by butchers in both islands. An "eat more beef" campaign was started by the Meat Producers' Board some two or more years ago and it had had a remarkable effect on the consumption of beef, with the result that there was a good inquiry for best finished sorts which made for the stability and success of the industry. The growth and development of beef cattle warranted more interest being taken in the training of young judges in these classes for A. and P. Societies. There appeared to be insufficient men coming forward to take the place of those who periodically retired, and if it could be arranged that wherever possible a junior could accompany a judge in his deliberations it would serve to assist in keeping up the ranks. Mr. E. E. Short (Feildingj, was elected president and Messrs. C. A. T. Levett (Feilding), Gregor McGregor (Wanganui) and A. Swift (Taihape) were elected to fill vacancies on the council.
