ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

TAUPO FISHING FEES. I MEANING TO BE SOUGHT. A meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society was held last evening, ihe president, Mr. C. A. Whitney presiding. Discussion arose over the proposed increase in the fees for fishing licenses for the Taupo district. The suggested fees are £•'! for New Zealanders. £1 10/ for Taupo residents and £6 for overseas sportsmen. Doubt was expressed as to whether or not the proposals affected the existinc general fee of £1. Mr. Whitney said the society would deprecate any attempt to increase ihe fee for New Zealanders. The Auckland Society had stocked Lake Taupo and the Auckland rivers. He understood that after the taking over of the fishing ri_hts of Lake Taupo from the Maoris the Government had to find the revenue. This he felt should be collected from tourist-. A sub-committee was set up to inmiire into the matter.

One member told how sportsmen were surprised when fishinsr on the last day of the season in brackish water at the mouth of the Waikato River they causrht 19 rainbow trout, one of them bein_ a nine-pounder. Tt was at first a mystery how fish assumed to have been of the fresh water variety had survived after having travelled throusrh miles of brackish water. The explanation appears to lie in the theory that the trout were of the Steelhead kind — salmo irideus. ns they are termed technically. Tf this is the case they a<c t'.« first *....l'. .....u known to have flourished in New Zealand waters.
