THE MAYOR RETURNS.
SATISFACTORY TALK "WITH PREMIER. BELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT. "I was well satisfied with the result of my interview with the Prime Minister," said the Mayor (Mr. George Baildonl on his return from Wellington this morning. It was gratifying to have the assurance that the Government would contribute £117.001) towards the cost of the proposed waterfront roadway to Orakci. since this work would provide employment for a large number of men. Mr. Baildon said he could not give any indication of the date when the work would be put in hand. That was a matter for the Public Works Department. With regard to the reconditioning of the tramway tracks, Mr. Baildon said that, as the Government had approved of the expenditure of £100.000 on this work, without requirin. the sanction of the ratepayers, the work would be put in hand at an early date. Approximately 200 men. over and above the usual staff, would be employed on the work. Referring to the Government's approval of his suggestion that other local bodies be empowered to raise money for urgent works. Mr. Baildon said he thought the number of unemployed should he materially decreased if advantage were taken of the available facilities. When local bodies began to offer work, and when the harbour, waterfront roading and tramWay johs were under way, much relief would be afforded, but care would have fo be taken to ensure that men who had good jobs in the country did not throw them up in order to pet places in town.
