HARBOUR NOT SHOALING.
A denial to the statement that the harbour is shoaling nil is given hy the board's engineer (Mr. T). HoUlernpss) i,i a renort forwnrrled to the chairman (Mr. Tf. R. Macken7.ip). 'Tnder the heading •Poor Tides. , -ITarhour Silting Up.' it ia claimed in the -Star" of June 0 that the tide gauges demonstrate the harbour to he gradually shoalinsr up." says the report, "ft is said that thin is'due to a slow hut steady rising of the land in the southern hemisphere. Full tidal data is kept by the board, and the results are carefuly studied and analysed, and no such tendency is indicated" over the past 23 years, covering the time that the automatic tide gause has been in commission. Actually in 100.1 the mean sea level as determined by taking the mean all high and all low tides was Sift 21in above Auckland dock sill, while in l') 28 the mean level was Oft 2->in aboe \OS The lowest was in IDOB. when the mean le\el was Oft above A.TXS.. and the highOf 7y 'V.' Vi™ thp mwn level was Bft 4iin above A.D.S.. givin an PXtremp vanation of 4Jin, which is atributable. to meteorological conditions, but there is no general tendency to shoal or to deepen.'
