PORTLAND. A social nnd fiance was held in the Portland Hall on Tuesday, as a welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Krie Hay and family, Mr. Hay having taken up the position as secretary to the Portland Welfare League. The guests were welcomed by Mr. l>. Forbes, chairman of the league, and a telegram wns read from the directors of Wilsons Portland Cement Company, wishing Mr. Hay every success in his work at Portland. A ball was held last Friday iv aid or the building fund for the new Anglican church. During the evening Key. J. Rich presented medals to the Portland school boys' football team, which won the primary schools' seven-aslde tournament at Whangarol on King's Birthday. Kl/MEU. W. <»reen to represent it on a deputation from kindred associations which will meet the chairman of the District Highways Board to deal with the question of securing better road access to Helensville and districts served from that centre. MANUREWA. There was an enthusiastic gathering of Oddfellows in the Manurewa Theatre, to assist nt the installation of the officers of the Incnl lodge for the ensuing year. Surrounding lodges evidenced considerable interest in the proceedings, visitors being present from Papakura. Papatoetoe and other centres. Bro. I). H. The meeting also resolved that it was strongly In favour of the establishment of a junior high school in Te Awamutu. RAETIHI. The newly-built Druids' Hall was officially opened on Tuesday evening. There was a large and representative gathering (if the Order present, including several visitors from other lodges. Bro. A. Gracie, District President, of Marton. performed the opening ceremony. Bro. Gracie said it gave him great pleasure to see such a fine building erected as a Druids' lodge in Raetihi. and he was proud to be associated with the brethren who had erected the building. Considering the comparatively short time the lodge had been in existence he was of opinion that few, if any, lodges had made such rapid strides as the local lodge had done. He complimented not only the officers, hut also all the members who had put their energies into the affair. After several new members had been initiated Bro. Gracie. on behalf of the Grand Lodge, performed the ceremony of the installation of officers.
