AN HISTORIC INN.

The license of the Star and Garter public-house at Portsmouth, once ajavourite resort of Nelson and other old sea-dogs, has been saved from extinction. The house had been scheduled for demolition, but the brewers promised to make the necessary repairs, and the license was renewed. The Star and Gaiter has been a hostelry since 1551, and in the days of the "wooden walls" was the resort of naval officers, Earl Howe, Earl St. Vincent and Lord Kelson regularly stayed there. Sir John Franklin, the Arctic explorer, also stayed at the house, and year after year Lady Franklin returned to occupy the rooms in' which she had lived with her husband, after all hope .of the ill-fated expedition had been given up.
