LAUNCH NOVELTY.
SUPER-PRESSED BOILERS. RIVAL TO THE DIESEL. The Admiralty, it is said, are keenly interested in tlio details of the King Creorge V. Clyde pleasure steamer, which was recently launched at Dumbarton. For the first time in any ship new high-pressure water-tube boilers are to be installed. constructed by Messrs. Yarrow and Co., Scotstoun, and also new types of turbine*, of which much is expected. It is believed that this new mode of marine propulsion will make the turbine a serious rival to the Diesel engine. At present the liijrhe-st steam pressure used in marine propulsion is about 2001b per equare inch, but the new high-pressure boilers fitted in the King George Y. are to yield a, pressure of 5501b per square inch, and will be used in conjunction with a new type of Parsons geared turbines, capable of standing a temperature of 75Odeg. Fahrenheit, which is double what the average turbine has to stand at present. In view of the great heat a special metal which has been discovered is to be used in the construction of the turbines. A sea speed of 21 knots is expected, and it is claimed that this can be secured on about a third less consumption of fuel. The new boilers are so fitted that coal or oil can be used as occasion arises.
