DEVONPORT'S NEW WHARF.
"AN URGENT WORK. , ' \ CONSTRUCTION IN FEW MONTHS. "The construction of a new wharf for Devonport lias been lifted out of the realm of uncertainties and has now a definite place in the Harbour Board's programme.'' declared Mr. John Henderson at the Devonport Borough Council meeting last evening. Mr. Henderson, who represents the northern boroughs on tiic board, stated that it? decision to proceed almost immediately with a new passenger and vehicular wharf for Devonport was of tiie utmost importance- to the borough, and should be co-ordinated with borough construction work in the vicinity. The wharf was now rated as an urgent work in the board-? programme, and the preparation of plans for construction within a few months was authorised. These would shortly be submitted to the borough council for comment and approval. The wharf would be built according to modern ideas, with lloatinz stages for the embarkation of passengers, and when complete would constitute the finest improvement for many years to the northern waterfront. If the borough could simultaneously undertake the widening of Queen's Parade to its full width of 100 ft by the erection of a sea wall, Devonport's harbourside would be complete. Commenting on Mr. Henderson's statement, the Mayor emphasised the necessity of preventing the erosion of Queen's l'arade. and thought that by co-opera-tion with the Harbour Board, who were reopening their Kangitoto Quarry, the dual works might be undertaken. The council should consider the possibility of taking advantage for this purpose of Cabinet's sanction to raise money for urgent works without a poll of the ratepayers. If the Harbour Board's dredae'could help the work, it would be better than making it an excavation job The council agreed that the borough engineer should co-operate with the Harbour Board staff in the preparation of a plan to harmonise borough requirements with the Harbour Board project, the announcement of which was received with general pleasure by council members.
