BAY DEFEATS WANGA-TOI.' A SUBSTANTIAL VICTORY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, Saturday. The second Ranfurly' Shield match of the season, Hawke's Bay v. Wanganui, was played to-day in fine, cold weather, Hawke's Bay winning by 36 points to 3. Wanganui kicked off, and following up very fast, got to within five yards ol Hawke's Bay's line. Nepia cleared with a gopd kick. From a line-out Hawke's Bay took play into Wanganui territory. From a scrum Bellis secured and with a great kick found the line about halfway. Play was fairly even for a few minutes, when Wanganui attacked strongly, and almost got through, but Nepia again saved. A line-out saw Cooke get the ball, but Hawke's Bay were penalised for off-side. Leahy missed with the kick. Cooke cut infield and securing the ball'went down the line, eventually passing to Grenside, who scored in the corner. M. Brownlie failed to convert. Wanganui took the offensive and were forcing- play, but Cooke; who was playing brilliantly, made a break with the ball and passed to Grenside. The latter made a great sprint, but he was collared within ten yards of the line. From a line-out Kirkpatrick secured and dived over. Grenside failed with the kick. Mill got the ball out.quickly from a scrum to Tart, who went well down the field, but he was collared by Bennett. A line-out saw Cooke snap the ball up, and with terrific speed, he rushed through to score under the posts. Wanganui were awarded a penalty and Cameron kicked a beautiful goal. From a scrum shortly afterwards Hawke's Bay backs got going, Tait making a great sprint to the Wanganui twenty-five, but the visitors', fullback made a great save. Bellis, who was playing a great game, secured from a line-out. and put in a great run, only to be stopped by Nepia when a try was almost certain. From a line-out a few minutes later Mill secured and, by clever "dummying" went through, passing to Cooke, who scored under the posts. Grenside converted. The visitors again set up a vigorous attack, but play was taken to Wanganui's end. where Cameron saved with a good kick. Hawke's Bay attacked strongly, but Wanganui were relieved by Cameron making a brilliant run, being checked a few feet from the line. Then Grenside secured and made a good run round and passed to Cooke, who again dived over. M. Brownlie failed to convert. At half-time the scores were:— Hawke's Bay 17 Wanganui 3 The second spell was in Hawke's Bay's favour. After brilliant passing by Hawke's Bay Swain scored near the posts and Grenside converted. Then Wanganui gave a gjjod exhibition of passing, but Cooke intercepted. He sent the ball back to Swain, who scored near the posts. Mill kicked the goal. Hawke's Bay then attacked vigorously, but Wanganui were relieved by forcing. Play was kept in Wanganui's territory, until Bellis eased by a good kick. Then M. Brownlie got through, passing to Tait, who scored." Mill missed the kick. Bellis made a great mark, sending the ball back to the Hawke's Bay twentyfive, but Irvine forced his way through and scored: at the corner." Mill missed the kick.
