POLICE COURT.
(Before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.) STRUCK WITH A BOTTLE. The self-styled "champion lightweight of New Zealand," William Fowler (33), a fireman off the e.s. Kaitoke, when charged with assaulting Joseph Partidy, told the magistrate that he did not remember anything about the matter. Parndy, whose head was swathed in yards of bandages, stated that about five minutes to six last evening he was in the public bar of the Waverley Hotel having a drink. Aβ he was raising the glass to his lips he was struck over the head with a bottle. He did not see his assailant, but was told that it was accused who struck hip. As a result of the blow a gash two inches in length was inflicted, and he had to be sent to the hospital in the ambulance. Two seafaring men who were also in the bar stated in evidence that during the course of an argument accused said that he was the "light-weight champion of New Zealand." They both saw accused strike Parndy with the bottle. Constable Allan stated that when arrested accused was quite drunk. On the way to the lock-up he told witness that he struck Parndy with his fist and not with a bottle. Fowler was a member of the crew of the Kaitoke, which was at present laid up. He was shortly to be sent back to Sydney. He had £15 on him when arrested. Mr. Hunt fined acused 5/, or 24 hours, for being drunk, and £5, or 14 days, for the assault. The magistrate ordered Fowler to pay the expenses of two witnesses, £1, ambulance fee 10/6, and directed that half of the fine should go to Parndy. ANOTHER ASSAULT CASE. On Edward Francis Smith (27) admitting having assaulted Kenneth Parkinson yesterday afternoon, Sergeant Dunsford stated that accused went to the watersiders' room on the wharf and had an argument with the caretaker, Parkinson. He was advised to go away, but struck complainant. The assault was not of a serious nature. HIS PROPHECY CAME TRUE. Smith was fined £2 or seven days' imprisonment. Mane Mason (47), a Maori, is something of a prophet. Yesterday afternoon he was ejected from the bar of the Waitemata Hotel by a policeman. Once out in Customs Street he commenced to wave his arms about and throw his hat down on the footpath. "I'm going to be locked up by the policeman," he called out several times. And he was, for Constable Fuller collected Mason on a charge of being disorderly while drunk in Customs Street. Mason was fined £1. BACK TO GAOL AGAIN. Described by the maintenance officer as a master mariner who just would not work, .Ernest Hugo Korn (46) appeared, charged with having been found by night on the launch Pastime. at the Victoria Cruising Club's slip, Beaumont Street. The police said that Korn had been sleeping on the launch for a week. Several complaints had been received about thefts from the locality. , Mr. Campbell said that he was going to issue a warrant for the arrest of Korn over a maintenance order. However, this was unnecessary now that he had been arrested by the police. Accused had not >een long • out of gaol, after' serving a j sentence for default of maintenance. After he had perused Korn's list of \ previouj convictions, Mr. Hunt consigned him to Mt. Eden for one month. CASES REMANDED.
