LEVEL CROSSING AGAIN.
TRAIN WRECKS MOTOR LOBBY DRIVER IX HOSPITAL. • A collision occurred early last evening at the Church Road level crossing new Southdown, when the 5.42 train from i Auckland to Mercer struck a motor lorry, smashing it to matchwood. The two occupants had a miraculous escape > from death. The owner and driver of the lorry, Mr. William Sheppard, aged 26, sustained several broken ribs, and the second occupant, Mr. T. Home, received slight ' injuries to the head and hands. From the wheel marks which were visible just after the accident, it is evident that the lorry had practically, cleared the line before it was struck by the train. It was then dragged for a . short distance before being thrown several feet clear on to the edge of thej road. The motor lorry Is a total wreck. One of the back wheels and a large wooden hood over the driver's seat were both torn off. The wooden framework was wrenched from the body, and the metal work was badly twisted. Strangely enough the bonnet had not even a dent in it, and the engine does not apear to be badly damaged. Both of the injured men were conveyed to the Auckland Hiepital, where Mr. Sheppard was admitted. To-day his condition was reported as being satisfactory. After receiving treatment, Mr. Home was able to proceed to his home.
