Among remits adopted by the confer- j ence of technical school teachers are j the following: — ! That- a system of technical school ex- , animations and certificates be estab- ] lished by the Education Department j with the advice and assistance of an j expert technical schools' board. j • That the Senate of the University be j asked to recognise as. soon as practic-; able the work of the technical schools, j and that credit for work done in appro- j I ved technical schools be given as part j !of the courses for degrees and diplomas. j That it is desirable the Education' Department convene conferences of unii versity college staffs and technical staffs in each university centre, with a view iof co-ordinating the work of the two j institutions and thus avoiding over- . lapping. j That special representations be ma.de jto the Department, urging the adoption jof Mr. Tate's recommendations for improving the standard of technical education' in New Zealand, particularly in respect to (a) technical school examinations, (b) accrediting students for entrance to university courses, '(c) university diploma courses to be taken partly at technical schools. That this association is strongly opposed to any suggestion that commercial subjects should be removed from i,. the syllabus of technical schools and considers that such a step would be especially detrimental to the welfare of the children. That the executive gives notice of the following addition to the constitution: jNo branch shall bring before the MinisI ter or the Education Department any I matter affecting the technical school ! teachers of the Dominion as a whole, ' except throught the executive of the association, and no branch shall bring before the Education Board or the Technical School Board of its districts any matter affecting the manual or technical school teachers of the education district as a whole except through a committee, consisting of representatives of all branches in the district, or of proxies appointed by representatives. When the question of commercial education • was discussed, it was decided to request the Department to publish a statement revealing its intention relative to depriving the technical schools of their commercial classes, as teachers of commercial subjects were said to he diffident about applying for positions in technical schools when the fate of these classes was uncertain. . A resolution was also carried asking the Department to give the Technical School Teachers' Association an opportunity of stating its views on the retention of the commercial classes. It was also resolved that the executive of the association be asked to take steps to dispel the misapprehension on the part of the public and the Press in respect of the numbers taking the commercial classes and general courses at technical schools.
