FIERCE STORM IN TARANAKI

LIGHTING SERVICES CUT OFF. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this.day. A fierce westerly storm visited Taranaki on Monday night and yesterday, : interrupting both the telegraphic and j electric light and power services. [ A large tree falling across a trans- ' mission line interrupted the New ' Plymouth lighting service, and caused ; Waitara to be plunged into darkness I nearly all night. Repairs have now been effected. There "was a tremendous sea on the coast, but all shipping lay easily behind I the breakwater. The small steamer Kurnalpi, from Picton to Onehunga, put in here for shelter. Lightning struck the West End School, but was "earthed" through the electric light meter, which exploded, causing some windows to -be broken..
