SIX ARRESTS.

SHOPLIFTING GANG. DARDsG OPERATORS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, April 30. Evidenpe of the existence in Sydney of a well-organised gang of women shop lifters, who, working on the co-opera tive principle, have stolen and disposed of hundreds of pounds' worth of frocks since January, is in the possession oj local detectives. One city firm, fn particular, has losi numbers of valuable frocks in thai period, while the larger retail stores, oi course, are always the prey of shop lifters. l Detectives assigned to the job oi stopping the thieving have already made six arrests. Five of the suspects art women, and the other a man. Police claim that they Avere all mem bers of the one gang. Their method wai ingenious. Having selected a emafi stor< specialising in frocks, members of tin gang -would enter at intervals of a fey minutes, and engage the shop assistant; of that floor, all on. ofe side of th< building. This would leave the other side bare and it was then that the operative mem ber entered with an attache case. Intc this she crammed as many frocks as sh< could take i n the limited time at Jiei disposal, and made her getaway withoui rousing any suspicion whatever. Each member of the gang took hei turn at the actual stealing of th< frocks, which were taken to a centra depot m Darlinghurst. From this depoi they were peddled round the suburb; by the man, who sold them singly sc as to rouse no suspicions. Detectives who made the arrests have recovered many frocks, and anticipat« making further arrests.. Correspondence has been going on ii the 'Times" about the origin of tin name of London. Scorning the sugges tion that its beginning was due to i Swedish mariner's naming, the Eev. G R. E. Rees says in a letter:—"The tw< opposing hillocks on each side of wha was later called the Fleet, each 35 fee high, stood out from the floodec marshes south, east and west. Topo graphical fitness is satisfied by th. traditional derivation—'Llyn-din, s lake fort." Another correspondent refers tc the not inconsiderable number of "Lon don ' place-names and . mentions thre. Little London" spots known to him ir Herefordshire. But there are certainh other examples elsewhere.
