SPEED TRAP.
AUTO. PRESIDENT CAUGHT. FIXED FOR SPEEDING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Herbert Filmer, president of the Wellington Automobile Association... a prominent motorist, was before the court to-day charged with speeding and breaking the regulation speed of twenty miles an hour. The police evidence was that defendant was timed over a distance of 200 yds by police officers, who found him to have been travelling at over 20 miles an hour. Mr. Treadwell, for the defence, submitted that the system of traps set by the police had to be greatly perfected before such a conviction could be warranted. An error of one second in timing would result in the motorist being wrongfully prosecuted. •Filmer stated that he was unable to say exactly at what speed he was travelling at the time, but was under the impression it would be between 20 and i\3 miles. Defendant was convicted and fined 20/, with costs.
