SEQUEL TO WAIHI KAID, AND SADNESS." FIVE PERSONS HEAVILY FIXED. ' . (By Telegrapn.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, Tuesday. Hearing of the sly grog case in connection with the. recent raid by the police on the premises of residents suspected of trafficking in "home brew" was continued, this afternoon before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M. Evidence as to the sale of liquor was given by Constable Dunn, pf Wellington. Senior-Sergeant McLean conducted the prosecution, and Mr. W. W. Porritt (Padroa) represented defendants. In giving his decision, the Magistrate said that the evidence was clear in each case and a great deal of time had been ■wasted in the defence. Culpable perjury had been committed in at least one instance. In connection with the charges Of keeping licuior for sale the. onus was on the defendants-to prove the contrary. The evidence disclosed'that there was a great deal of illicit selling of liquor in this district, and a certain amount of squalidness and sadness, two of the defendants beng physical wrecks. Each case, however, would have to be treatedas a breach of the Act. Quintal, Bennett and Meachem were each convicted and fined £20 for selling, and £5, with costs, for keeping- liquor for sale. Lewis.was fined £20 for selling, and ordered to pay costs for keeping liquor for sale. Gilpin was fined £20 for keeping liquor for sale, and was ordered to pay costs on the charge of selling.
