STABLE AND TRACK GOSSIP.. (By WHALEBONE). . . FIXTURES. April 29, May I—South Canterbpry J.C. April 30. May I—Hawke'a Bay J.C. May 1. 3—Watkato K.C. «gf May s—Warerley B.C. il May 18. 15—Egmont B.C. i - May 15—North Canterbury R C. May 2(J, 22—Wanganul J.C. f June 1, 3, s—Dunedin J.C. June 3, s—Otaki-Maori K.C. June 3, 3, 7—Auckland B.C. I ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. I F.B. (Parnell)—The distance is a mile and a-quarter. Te Koroke is coming on better now, and he looks as though he may be useful. He ran second at Whangarei to 1 Serang. Elthein was only beaten by a very harrow margin by her stable companion. Kiosk, at Trentham, and it teas no surprise to see her-, get on the winning.list at Manawatu. She is by Elysian, and is a youngster above the average. Barangi finished with great dash in the Awanui Hack Handicap at Whangarei on Thursday, but'it was too late and she had'to be content with fourth place. She is sure to be in the limelight' again before long, for she has more than average pace, and can carry' weight, too. Merry Jest ran'well at Ellerslie.ihut she did not perform as prominently at Trentham. She, however, showed that it was only a matter of a little while before she would be on the winning list again, and she scored a,t Awapuni. Merry Jest was a good two-year-old, and she still retains her pace. , Civility, after running second to Tommy Dodd at Wellington, showed that she was returning to form, and at the Manawatu meeting she won the J Telegraph Handicap and was juet 'beaten by the. narrowest of margins on the second day. Civility is right 'back to her best form, and will win further good races. Magna Charta followed up his success in the Plunket Nursery at Trentham by running second to Elthein at Awapuni. Elthein, though entered for the Plunket Nursery, did. not. start. She was conceding Magna Charta lClb in that event, and on Thursday, met him and just beat him at a difference of 81b. This makes Magna Charta a pretty fair sort. Kiosk <was one of the very early Tea Trays to race this season, and he-won at his second start. He is a well-built youngster, and is one of the finest of this sire's progeny to look at. He won well at Wellington, and at Awapuni downed a good field of two-year-olds in the Manawatu Stakes. Kiosk will be one of the best of the Tea Trays next J year if he retains his present form. Dobbin showed sufficient in the. last race at Wellington last Saturday to say that he would salute the judge bafore long, and he performed well subsequently at the Manawatu meeting, running first and second in two outings. Ihapotoa, to. which he is a half-brother, was very speedy, and it appears ■, as j though Dobbin will be as good as Ihapotoa when he is a little more seasoned. On Wellington running it looked as though Phantasy would not be long in materialising. She finished third on a couple of occasions at Trentham, and she was running on. At , Manawatu she . contested two races-of a. mile and 110 yards, and the extra, distance suited her, for she won both. As Phantasy is oniy i a three-year-old filly she appears as j though she is going to be pretty useful. i —■~ — ..... I Spoony was confidently backed by the public at Whangarei, and won well. He was always handy, and when Bagby asked him for a final effort in the I straight, lie responded. Mr. F. Earl 'has now won two cups with Spoony ; during the last few weeks, but no one ! will begrudge such a good sportsman the trophies he receives, for he doea a great deal for racing and all con- . nected with it. . . . ' f The half-brother to . Ballymena, Limerick, is a brilliant two-year-old, and if he goes on the right way -between now I and October next there is every prospect jof this youngster going to Sydney to (contest the A.J.C. Derby. Limerick won I the Challenge Stakes (seven furlongs) at I Riccarton in 1.26, beating .CommendaI tion, and at Manawatu this week downed 'both Lyeander and Commendation in the Sires' Produce" Stakes. His forte is staying, arid .at present he j appears as though he is going to be a worthy successor to Ballymena. . There has teen divided opinion as to the relative merits of Commendation and Lysander. In the Great Northern Foal j Stakes Commendation* stood on the mark |and took no part in. the race, while Lysander won. In the Royal Stakes Lysander was not at his best, and Comj mendation finished third and Lysander j fourth; Since then 'they did ; not I meet till Wednesday last, in the Manawatu Sires' • . Produce . Stakes. j and Lysander was second, while Commendation was unplaced. .Lysander was apparently a ; bit unlucky' to be beaten. It certainly looks as though Lysander is the. better two-year-: old. In stake earnings, anyhow, he is well in front, haying earned .3023spvs' as against Commendation's 240Osovs. One wonders why horses that apparently have not been properly schooled, are allowed to start in' hurdlfe races. Miss June, which was among those saddied up at Whangarei on Thursday, has' a lot of pace, hut whether she can jump-or not is a<"different matter. Of course, when the barrier went up she tore away to the .front and almost pulled up at the first hurdle, which she got over. Away she went again, but the other jockeys were ■ content to let her go. and come to grief, and to be out of her way-, when it happened. The second fence saw her come full tilt at it, only to baulk and' slew, along it, with the result that-she lost' her rider.. Now, if the other horses had been close to her, there is no.doubt that there would have been a serious accij dent. Horses, should at least know how to jump before they are started* in', a hurdle race, and owners should j see that such is the case, for, if they.--do not, they are only increasing the. great'-'I risks every hurdle jockey' entails, even when he sets out on a good hor.se. Despite her ° dangerous exhibition, Miss. June is among those allowed" to be accepted for in the hurdles, te-dayt Stipendiary stewards should ~be~ given; the power to stop that tort of 4Mng».

Nippy is very well just now, md he won/well at Wiiangarei. A St.; Lucas, a four-year-old gelding, by Lueullus, showed, a lot of -pace in the Maiden Plate.at Whangarei, and should be; seen to advantage before long. ' *. Marble Crag, on his running over hurdles at Whangarei, will- be among those fancied in much more-important events before loDg. 'He can jump and also has pace; Hipo continues to run well in mile and a-quarter races, and at Manawatu he was only'beaten by''a length in the smart time 6i 2.5 1-5. Hipo''should be troublesome when he is aagin seen out. ■ Waning Light, a filly by Day Comet, formerly trained by N. Cunningham at Ellerslie, finished with, a great burst of speed in the Mangonui Handicap at Whangarei. on Thursday, and won the evtnt'. She should certainly be heard of a g ain - ; , ■ • Schorr, a maiden by Day Comet, was showing up in the Maiden Plate for a while at Whangarei on Thursday, eventually finishing fourth. With a little more experience (for he has only started racing recently) 5 he may turn out all right. Fapatu is a good sort and more races can be. expected to come his way beforelong. .He is by Romeo from Gambode, and'ran well at the Ellerslie meeting, finishing second to White Fang in the Nelson Handicap. He won all the way at Whangarei. Serang, the full brother to Loyal Jrieh; has not been unduly hustled by hie trainer, J. Buchanan, and he is becoming very solid now. At Whangarei, on Thursday, he won well, and, as he is in nice condition, further victories are sure to go his way. ' Passionate seemed to get a bad bump in the big race at Whahgarei on Thursday, which knocked him back some lengths. He, however, came again in the straight, and finished fourth. It looks as though he may yet stay out a mile' and aquarter, or a little further. Charlady raced a great, deal better over a distance than many expected when she finished third in the Waipapakauri Cup at Whangarei on Thursday. She was tone of tlje pacemakers all the way. Uralla, . which finished second, also ran on better than formerly. Marble Crag was to a large extent responsible for Archibald getting beaten in , the hurdle race at Whangarei . on Thursday. He made Archibald carry his'big weight all the war, while Peter Roea lay in behind them". Once over the last hurdle, Peter Rosa. had ' them ; both beaten. Archibald, however, ran •a 'great race in the- circumstances. Rapine is at his best, and it was a great performance after winning the -Trentham Gold Cup, two miies, to down Reremoana and Grand Knight in the j Awapuni Gold Cup, one mile and a quarter. Some great horses have annexed this event; including Desert Gold (three times in succession), Sasanoff, Amythas, Ballymena, Chortle and Thespian. Rapine is ' easily the best handicap horse over a distance in commission in New Zealand to-day, while at weight-for-age he has no superior. B. Deeley, since his license was restored to him, had his first mount at Whangarei on Thursday, riding Dress Circle, on which he finished fourth. Ben has been riding a lot of work for many months past at Ellerslie, : and it would not be surprising to see hi&vshow a bit of his old time form before long. With just a little bit. of luck, it is stated, he would have been on Papatu in the first race, but applied for the mount a little too late. Papatu, on Ellerslie running, was a certainty, and it would have been pleasing to chronicle a win for Deeley in his first ride. Chairman is a really good horse, and there is no doubt that he will be sought after in more prominent events later on. He showed his ability when he won o? the first day at the Ohinemuri meeting, and on the secnod day, after winning another hack race, was started in the chief sprint of the day. After bein<r the last to get away he came round the turn on terms with the leaders, and was well clear at the distance, but just failed to see it out. On Thursday at rei Letter of Credit took him on for five furlongs, the pair racing together, but the Papakura-trained filly had tberi had enough, and finished last, while Chairman won handsomely. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star. , *) CHRISTCHURCH, Fridaj'. Bautifully fine weather lias been the order for the past few days, ideal for training operations, which have provided nothing , out of the ordinary. The bad spin that Rlccarton horses have had on their trip to Wellington and 'Manawatu was only checked when Lrimerick won the Manawatu Sires .Produce Stakes ' from Lysander. while the crack Commendation, was unplaced. This Is , the second occasion on "which Limerick has beaten Lysander, and as both races has been over seven ruriohg-s it seems plain that the Riccarton con is the more liKely to develop into a Derby candidate. From what can be learned of the race Limerick won on his merits, and McCarten used his judgment in stick-ing to the rails, and he was lucky enough to rind an opening: at the right time. Had Limericfc been in the centre or the field it is more than probable that he would have run away from the whip, and would thus have lost valuable ground. Whatever his lailingrs at pfresent, it can be said that Umerlck has £iven every promise or turning out a stayer. Though -Los Ambus was accepted ror in two events on the first day or the Manawatu meeting , . He was not taken to the fixture. Los Ambus and Receipt are now at Riccarton, and both will race at the South Canterbury meeting , next week. At Trentham Receipt looked as though she had done enough racing, but her connections think .otherwise, for out or the 12 flat events to be decided at South Canterbury, Receipt was nominated Tor six. Prince Ferouz, All Gold, Cashman. North Inch, and- Rapid Rose are among-st the West Coast contingent likely to race at the South Canterbury meeting. Aapid Rose will-later on join , the team of hurdlers in J. B. Pearson's stable. Chariaton, the only real steeplechaser in Riccarton stables, is looking particularly well, and if he stays better this year than he did last season, he should add more cross country honours to his list within the next few months. C. Eastwood, our most promising apprentice, is having- no luck at all, for some weeks ago a bad fall at Marlborough left him with two broken collar bones. Another fall at Welling-ton followed, and on the second day at Manawatu Crown Reel came day with Mm, and slight concussion is the result. It Is to be hoped that now that Eastwood has had his third stroke or bad luck within a short time that Dame Fortune will bestoTr one of her cherished smiles. J. McCombe, the Rlccarton trainer, was iotoked ■to leave' Sydney to-day for ?> ew Zealand u-ith fine Juveniles purclwsed. at mc Sydney jrearling-aales.

Count Cavour is running in the paddock. Jarretiere has joined H. Ellis' team. Monoxide is to be retired to tne stud. A yearling sister to this marc i 3 said to be one of the most promising young-stere in the South. King- Abbey, who was recently brought down rrom Auckland, is going along: satisfactorily in his work under J. B. Pearson's care. If any good at all. he should win a good number of hurdle races. Limerick, on his return from the North, will be spelled and taken up in time to receive a good preparation ror the Australian Jockey Club's Derby. TRAINING NOTES, Work at Ellerslie was very quiet this morning, nearly all the horses being away at Whangarei. No grass track was available, and all fast work was done on the sand. Princess Ronnie ran seven furlongs by herself in 1.33 3-5, and went very rreely. Sulla and Zircon ran six rurlongs, and were not bustled in 1.27, Sulla being well in front. Olenotus (Rae) was schooled over the sod wall, double, and stone wall or the steeplechase course (twice), and gave a 1 good display. !
