NEVER INSIDE GAOL.

SEVEN TIMES CONVICTED. GIVEN MANY CHANCES. CANVASSER GETS SEVEN MONTHS. "You have never been inside a goal yet. That is your trouble. You have been indulged in by the courts, and you have been taking advantage of it. By doing so you have brought the law into contempt and are only encouraging others." So said Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., at the Police Court this morning when he sentenced James Stewart Grogan (45), to prison for seven months. Grogan was charged with stealing £8 18/9, the property of Lawrence Keys. Accused was ' further charged with failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation. Chief Detective Cu'mmings, in relating the facts of the case, stated that accused had been employed as a canvasser for photographs, and had- converted money collected to his own use. Grogan had been given many chances and had been placed on three years' probation for false pretences. The Probation Officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, said that Grogan had failed to make 'restitution and also to report himself. Grogan told -the magistrate that he had been employed as a canvasser oh a commission basis only. Mr. Poynton, in sentencing Grogan to six months on the first charge, and one month on the second, to be cumulative, said that he had been seven times convicted. He 'did not know any .other man who >ad been given co many chances.
