m ' -, ON MUNICIPAL COURTS. NOT AT TAKAPUNA. The decision of the Takapuna Borough Council to prohibit Sunday play on the public tennis courts at Kitchener Park, Milford, has lately been the subject .of considerable comment, and the matter received the council's further consideration last evening when a motion to rescind the previous resolution was defeated on the casting vote of the Mayor (Mr. J. D. Morison). In -moving the resolution prohibiting play be rescinded, Mr. C. Mackley again voiced the opinion that Sunday tennis, except between the hOufs Of eleven O'clock and noon, was-not a matter for objection. Golf aid swimming were Allowed, and therefore thete appeared; no reasoif' Why tennis should- be- barred. Supporting the. previous speaker;' yu.' : - A. H. WiMe quoted the ex-Chief Justice of New Zealand, Sir Robert Stout, as stating that open-air games oil Sunday would diminish Crime. The Mayor, supported by Councillors G. H. Matthews,, G. Creamer, and. J. Collins, said that be was dead against the rescinding of the resolution, considering that as the tennis courts were In a borough reserve the council would be making a grave mistake in allowing' Sunday play. The permission of Sunday games would mean the' beginning of.Sunday competitions. On a show of hands being taken it was seen that opinion was ecjually j divided, and the Mayor gave his casting ■ Vote against tbe rescinding of the prohibition. He said Mc was convinced he Was acting according to the wishes of the majority of the ratepayers; ■
