Magistrate refused this morning to make a man pay maintenance to his wife when she refused to go and live with him in the country. Mr. Mason's majority in the Eden byelection slightly reduced in the recount, while Miss Melville's polling night total has decreased by 50 odd votes. Action brought by the consignees against the captain and crew of the American barque Guy C. Goss, on a motion to discharge the cargo, adjourned to-day until Friday. Discussing the proposal to institute the community hospital system in New Zealand, Mr. VV. Wallace says we must guard against any "pauperisation" of the existing system.
