PAEROA HOSPITAL SITE.
ANOTHER COMPLICATION,
SUBSIDY ON THE LAND. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. The necessity for the repayment of a wrongly claimed subsidy amounting to £965 was featured in the annual report of the inspecting auditor for the Thames Hospital Board yeFterdav".
Tbe report revealed a somewhat peculiar position in connection with the site of the proposed Paeroa Hospital. This, according to tbe popular belief, was presented to the board by the Paeroa people as part of their share of financing the project. From what the inspector now contends, it appears that the site includes portions of three closed streets, the property of the Government. The board, acting on the representations of the Paeroa trustees cf the fund, has simply presented the Government with its own property and then requested a subsidy, which was actually paid before the irregularity was discovered.
The inspecting auditor's report, after detailing the circumstances, notified the board that, in its estimates for the coming year, it would be necessary to provide for the return of thr. subsidy, amounting to £065.
After discussion, it was decided by the board that the matte- be gone into with the Inspector-f'eneral of Health on his next visit to Thames.
