\ ' i MR. E. J. WALTERS. HEADMASTER HIKUTAIA SCHOOL. \ ' j At the age of 55 year*. Mr. Ernest f '.Tames Walters, son of tbe late Mr. J. R. ! i Walters, of Auckland, died in a privates 5 i hospital in Auckland yesterday morn- , i 'inc. He was born in Auckland and 7 ; entered tho teaching profession. He. j resided at Hikutaia for about 30 years, j' ■23 of whi.-h he was headmaster of the local public school. Mr. Walter? was: 1 much esteemed in tbe district, his jrener- [ ' ; ous disposition making him many j'• 'friends. He took keen interest in tbo J. 1 !progres* oi Hikutaia. and it was mainly!' due to his efforts that the public hall 1' was built at Hikutaia. and of which lie j * was secretary for 13 years. During the l war Mr. Walters took a prominent part in ■ ■ patriotic activities, giving generously j' and working untiringly for tbe cause. . lln conjunction with his profession J deceased established a model farm on his , ] property, familiarly known as "Mauriaena." Here he secured a pure Jersey herd, and bred many notable animals, being a prominent exhibitor and prizewinner at the A. and P. shows in the district. The deceased was one of the foundation members of the Thames : Talley Jersey Breeders' Club. Paeroa, ,and held the position of president for some time. A great lover and student of i Nature, he established a miniature zoo !on his property, which he took consider- ■ able pride and pleasure in. showing to visitors. Mr. Walters retired from the teaching profession about seven j'ears ago on account of failing health. Latterly he had resided with his brother lat Kingsland. Mr. Walters never I married.
