CRUELTY.

(To the Editor.! Sir, —With regard to the subject of cruelty to animals, I am pleased to sec that I. Xoble has made a useful contribution. Cruelty of any form is the one thing which any educated man or woman should not" tolerate for one moment. Regarding the subject of sheep, which I. Xoblo mentions. I am informed that a deplorable condition prevails iv their transport from the North to the South Island. I have been given to understand that- these poor "helpless creatures arriving at Lyttelton are often kept several days without food or water, and that when taken over the hills they are that weak they can only totter along at a snail's pace. One has only to look at a stock train to realise how these and other animals are made to suffer. A few months ago at Palmerston North I noticed the cattle trains coming in at night. Each time the train jolted its cumbersome way over the points, and stopped and restarted at the signals, there was a stampede of cattle banging and jostling against one another the whole length of the train. In connection with the deer problem, we are told that over 200 have been shot in the Rainbow district (Kelson) j during eight days. Evidently tlie slaughter of these innocents is well in progress. Yet ludicrously enough a few years ago the New Zealand Government was anxiously importing thesp animals. These are some of the things which! go on in our "enlightened" days of , advanced education, and will continue ' to go on until the public conscience has I been awakened by all-round humane | education. Cruelty is still cruelty wher- ' ever it is inflicted upon any living being, and the only way out is for each one of us to do his or her own little bit towards the enlightenment of public opinion.—I am, etc. i R. M. THOMSON. |
