MISS MELVILLE AT AVONDALE.
REITERATES CRITICISM.
After three weeks of campaigning in all parts of the Eden electorate. Miss Ellen Melville, who, as Independent Reform candidate. opened the Eden electoral contest in an address at Avondale on March 19, returned to the city end of the electorate last night to reierate what she had previously°said in criticism of Sir James Gunson's selection as official Reform candidate. Miss Melville also gave a statement of her politics.
"My politics were good enough for Grey Lynn five months ago," she said, in reply to which a voice challenged that they were not, because she had been turned down.
Miss Melville: Well, they were good enough for 0000 people, and if they are good enough for 5000 again on pbllin<* day. I shall be satisfied.
Frequent exchanges of friendly banter took place between the candidate and the audience, not without a touch of sarcasm when Miss Melville made reference to the ability of the Reform party.
The Reform party is not in opposition to mc," she remarked. "It is two gentlemen, <one called Davy and the other James."
As on the previous occasion of her address at Avondale, Miss Melville emphasised the need of having Parliamentary representation of women so that such questions as domestic assistance to mothers and maternal mortality might have better consideraion She wa"s in favour of all sound legislation on behalf of the women of the nation; but she took occasion to contradict a statement to the effect that she was an advocate of a compulsory uniform for girl workers J r 7 V' "■ Pott "' M-P- > s P°k e in support of the candidate: and, after Miss Melville had answered a number of questions, she was accorded a vote ol thanks and confidence.
