DISCUSSION BY RATEPAYERS

OPPOSITION TO LOAN PROPOSAL.

Tbe city water supply and the proposed loan were discussed at a public meeting held last evening at the Leys Institute under the auspices of the City West Ratepayers Association. Mr. A. G. Jarrett presided.

Tbe chairman said that while the ratepayers could reasonably vote for the loan of £70.000 for the proposed filtration plant they should reject the loan of £400.000 for waterworks extensions. His opinion was that the city should join in the Taupo scheme, as its share of that undertaking would be less than was proposed to be spent on the Waitakere development. Mr. Arthur Gray contended that tbe present position in connection with the j city's water supply was a danserous one, as the proposed augmented supply j would be obtained with difficulty, and. i even then, there would be insufficient j margin, as it would be only a question l of waiting .until thoy had a dry spell, i H" disapproved of the Huia scheme, as i a more certain supply could be got . from another source, cue which would I also eater for all the Waikato towns I and th.- Hauraki Plain* as well. It i was suggested that a pipe line oould be i laid to tan tbe Lower Waikato at a j .ost of £(".00.000. This would only be j a temporary scheme, as the major scheme ; would be Lake Taupo or a supply from • the artificial lake at Araiiuni. __b_rb__ Requirements. Air. T.
