THE TOLL OF THE WAR.

The death occurred in a Caulfield military hospital last month of " Baby" Bernard Haynes, a victim of war injuries, -who bore eight years of suffering with such remarkable fortitude that his name became known throughout Australia. . .He enlisted at the age of 14, was shattered by a shell at Bapaume in 1917, and had been a bedridden but cheerful invalid ever since. All the efforts of the surgeons were in vain though he was operated on no less than 40 times. " Baby," as he was known to all, had several diversions in his long years of suffering, but that which cheered him most was a visit to the Caulfield races, where he went whenever he was in * condition to be taken. He was only 23 at the time of hit death.
