ALL FOOLS' DAY.

AN ELABORATE HOAX.

MANY MOTORISTS VICTIMISED.

"AN UNDERSEA TUNNEL. 1,

(By Cable.—Press Association.—CopjTijat.j

(Received 0.30 a.m.)

LONDON, April 3.

The biggest April Fool hoax of recent years is described 'by the "Daily Chronicle." ,

Thousands of motorists -were victimised by a gilt-edged card on which was a' printed invitation to the opening of a vehicular undersea tunnel between Harwich and Felixstowe, stating that the tunnel would be opened at Easter weekend.

From six o'clock in the morning until midnight the public were invited to pass the toll-gate without payment. A handsome souvenir, signed by the chairman of the committee, would be presented to each motorist.

Crowds of motorists and others turned up at Harwich only to find that no such tunnel exists, although the scheme for such a tunnel was prepared two years ago.

The queue persisted, though policemen were specially stationed at the entrance to the town to warn the people that it was a hoax. — (A. and N.Z.)
