A FORTNIGHT'S PRAYER.

CABARET CLOSING CRUSADE.

CHICAGO, March 30.

Under "Crusaders" banner 1000 churchmen and women have spent a fortnight praying before the doors of 20 road-houses, which allegedly sold strong drink.

Crowds of revellers collected nightly at these resorts to watch the crusaders, and consequently the houses did roaring business.

All these road-houses, which are really wayside cabarets, are situated within a 20-mile radius of the city, the majority being out along the lake shore.

When the houses did not close the crusade was abandoned.

NEW FRENCH TAXES.

DISCOURAGING GLUTTONY.

PARIS, April 5,

Among the new taxes which have now been voted by the Chamber of Deputies is one on restaurant bills. This is designed to discourage gluttony.

Bills for less than 20 francs are not to be taxed. For higher amounts a stamp duty is to be imposed of, roughly, one centime for every franc up to 100 francs.

When a customer consumes-more than 100 francs worth of food and drink at a restaurant the penalty will be more severe.— (A. and N.Z.—Ruuter.)
