OFFENCES DUE 10 DRINK.

Edward Simmonds (38), charged with being disorderly while drunk in Albert Street yesterday, was fined £2, or three days. In addition to being charged with drunkenness in Fort Street, Harold Wyatt (29) had to answer another i charge of committing mischief by damaging an electric light fitting valued at 10/, the property of the New Zealand Government. On each he was fined 10/, in default, 24 hours. Sydney Kevey (34) was fined 10/, or 24 hours, for drunkenness in Broadway, Newmarket, and £2, or three days, for committing a grossly indecent act. DRUNKEN MOTORIST FINED. Eric Rupert Wheeler (31), for whom J Mr. Allan Moody appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car. Senior-Sergeant Edwards stated that at about SAo p.m. yesterday Wheeler |drove his car along I'atteson Street; Beaumont .Street, and back into Fanshawe Street, eventually being stopped iby a constable in Customs Street. White in Beaumont Street accused's car knocked down a pedestrian named James Edward Siangan. Mangan was slightly injured. Accused was well under the influence of liquor at the time. It was alleged that at one time he was travelling at 40 miles per hour.

! Mr. Moody said that Wheeler was not I a man who was in ilip habit of taking strong liquor. He had been gassed at the war. and yesterday had consumed several shandies. Counsel suggested that as accused had never l>ooll in trouble before that a line would meet the ease, and that if a fine was inflicted, accused should compensate Mangan, whose clothing and watch were damaged.
