SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY. In an interview in connection with the future of the shipbuilding Industry, the chairman of one of the biggest British ehipbuilding companies said that he felt justified in being moderately optimistic. Although he doubted whether much improvement would be noticed during 1926, he.believed that after that the better feeling between the employers and the workmen would begin to •bear fruit. A great step in the .right direction was made with the recent agreement, for the purposes of avoiding unnecessary trade disputes', and he hoped that very soon all opposition would be removed, nnd the pro-, visional agreement that was reached in the summer be ratified. German and Dutch competition was not nearly so serious as It was a few months back, while, in his opinion, the general efficiency of tlio majority of the British yards had improved, so that by co-operation between masters and workmeu, and better work in the yard,, British shipbuilders would . soon be in as good a position to obtain orders in direct competition with foreign yards as they were before 1914/ , At the same-, time ■he stated that a matter which must not be forgotten was that there was an increased desire on the Continent to build ships in the countries whose flags they are to fly.
