THE VICTORIA LEAGUE.

WORK OP LOCAL BRANCH. REVIEW OF PAST YEAR.

The adjourned annual meeting of the Victoria League will be held in the Lyceum Club, Short's Buildings, on Thursday evening. The past year has been one of marked success in every respect. The balance sheet shows a credit balance of £858.

The annual report makes sympathetic reference to the death of the Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, who for many years had been chairman of the Advice to Settlers' Committee, and also to the death of Mr. W. J. Napier, president of the Auckland brand! of the League. Mr. Napier had also acted as honorary solicitor to the League since its inception in 1910. The report states that the membership of the branch now stands at 1060, of whom 195 are life members. During the year donations have been made to the various city kindergartens, the Plunket Society, the Boy Scouts' Association, Young Citizen's League, and the ilassey Memorial Fund. An iron seat for the soldiers' cemetery at WaiIkumete was donated to the City Council. The seat was purchased with money collected by Veteran Frederick Mills at the Thames, and is suitably inscribed. The annual Empire Powder and Patch Ball was held on June '4th. In conjunction with the Navy League a ball was also held on the occasion of the visit of the American Fleet. A sum of £159 was raised from the annual Daffodil Day, and £80 from Poppy Day.

During the year visits were received from a number of intending settlers, bearing letters of introduction from the Home League, and all received a welcome and were helped in obtaining, work or in taking up land.

A member of the League is required to take over the supervision of the Children's Empire correspondence. Miss Reid, who at present is filling the post, has been, owing to stress of other work, and also for health reasons, compelled to practically relinquish this important work
