CHEAPER PAPER.
HALF THE COST.
Experiments concerning the substitution of wood of the eucalyptus for that of the spruce tree as a material for making newsprint paper has recently been reported from the University of Wisconsin.
It has been estimated there that such paper could be produced at about half the cost of the present imported variety, and such an invention it is expected will bring paper manufacture into great prominence in Brazil.
The eucalyptus grows readily in California, Arizona and Florida, and it has been stated that the climate in these States ■will render it possible for trees to be taought to pulp-wood size in about 8 or 9 years.
It is expected that this invention, besides being of great interest to paper men, -will prove a new trade of advantage to those in the shipping industry.
