INTER-EMPIRE TRADE.
USEFUL COMPARISONS. Questions which were answered In the House of Commons recently showed the extent to which Great Britain depends upon Empire trade. Whereas Russia took from Great Britain in 1925 goods to the amount of only 11d per head or her population, Australia took from Great Britain goods worth £10 2/11 per head, and New Zealand £16 4/11 per head of her population. More extended figures, though lor the preceding , year, are quoted by Barclay's "Bank Review." The importance or Empire development, ft wrote, would be more readily appreciated when it was remembered that 39 per cent of British exports were sent to Empire destinations, and 29 per cent of imports Into Great Britain were received from Empire sources. In terms or purchase? per head or population the Empire countries were, generally speaking-, much better customers of Great Britain than foreign countries, and there could be no cfuestion that every stop taken to promote trade and development within the Empire should directly assist in increasing- industrial activity in Great Britain. He pointed out that in this connection the following- table, showing- purchases per head of British g-oods by certain selected countries in iOJS. was instructive:—
