COMPETITION IN ENGLAND. LONDON, April 2. The Minister of Labour, Sir Arthur Steel-Maitland, has forbidden Paul Whiteman's famous American band to perform at the Tivoli cinema theatre, on the ground that it would displace 32 British bandsmen. " The Whiteman band is to be allowed to play at the Kitkat night club, where it is to receive £2200 a week, but the Minister, agrees with the Musicians' Union in opposing American bands obtaining work in England to the detriment of British musicians.— (A and N.Z.)
