CAUGHT IN THE SURF.

HOLMWOOD IN PERIL. FORTUNATE SHIFT OF WIND. SECOND MATE INJURED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The schooner Holmwood, which arrived on Thursday afternoon after a twenty-two days' passage from Newcastle, had an extremely rough trip. On' Wednesday last, with her sails in a tattered condition, she was caught in the surf at .Farewell Spit, the mountainous seas covering her deck with sand and shells. The truss of the foreyard was carried away, soon followed by the jaws of the main gaff, the second mate, Mr. Whitton, being injured by a piece of flying timber. The ship was in dire peril, but a sudden change of wind at the critical moment enabled her to regain the open sea. .
