The work of laying the Cook Strait cable to afford telephonic communication between the North and South Islands was commenced under favourable conditions. The Tutanekai steamed into position about half a mile from the shore at the entrance to Blind River and paid out over her etern the shore end of the cable, which was buoyed up every 50ft by barrels, so that it floated alone the eurface. . _ When sufficient had been paid out to Teach the land the floating cable was towed toward the ibeach by a motor boat. About 20yds out a rope was attached, and the cable was dragged up on the beach by two teams of four horses, the end being then made fast to a heavy log sunk about 6ft deep in the sand. This will serve as a mooring until a permanent anchor can be Constructed.
