OVER THE LIMIT.
AUTO SECRETARY CHARGED. HUTT ROAD SPEEDING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. When the secretary of the Wellington Automobile Association was before the Court, charged with exceeding 30 miles an hour on \'°t> Ifutt Road, a constable who had f> "owed him said that defendant was rtu.nfj 43 miles. Defendant said that, according to his speedometer, he was doing just under 30. A few <iays before he had had the instrument tested, and found that it was registering five or six miles less that it should. Counsel said it -was a serious charge, because defendant, with other members of his committee, had never broken the law. The committee was always advising motorists not to exceed the speed limits. The Magistrate said he was prepared to accept the evidence that the speedometer was not registering properly, but he believed the constable, and it was hard to understand that a man in defendant's position did not know the difference between 30 and 40 miles per hour. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs.
