FIJI BANANAS.
SHIPPERS AND GROWERS PLEASED. NEW MARKET POSSIBLE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, March 17. The shippers and growers of Fiji bananas are greatly excited at the prospects of obtaining a new opportunity of selling their produce in a friendly market. For some time they have been endeavouring to obtain direct access to the South Island of New Zealand, where it is believed there is a good demand for their produce. Recently dele c atcs from Fiji went to Dunedin and Christchureh, and, by request of the local chambers, addressed the members on the desirability of improving the trade relations as between the South Island cities and the South-west Pacific Island groups. The Union Steam Ship Company was also interviewed, and this week a cable message was received announcing that that company had decided to send on the cargo boat due here from Sydney on April 3, to Lyttlcton direct with a cargo of Fiji bananas. It is likely that 10,000 cases will constitute the trial shipment. The move has been strongly opposed by the Auckland agents, although they deny the soft impeachment. There will not be any shipments during the winter months if the advice of well-informed men is taken by the shippers at this end.
