SCHOLARSHIPS AT UNIVERSITY
COUNCIL APPROVES REGULATIONS,
With a view to making the Sanders Memorial Fund available for the creation of a number of new scholarships at the Auckland University College regulations governing the scholarship were approved by the council yesterday. The scholarship fund is £2200, which was contributed by citizens, and is subject to a £ for £ subsidy from the Government as a memorial to the late Lieut. W. E. Sanders,' V.C.
The regulations have been jointly drawn up by Sir James Gunson (trustee for the fund), the Auckland Merchant Service Guild, and the registrar of the college. They allow a wide discretion to holders, as no limitations are imposed in regard to the course of study, provided the necessary instruction is provided at the college.
The scholarships will be available for the sons and daughters of members of the Mercantile Marine, or of the Royal Navy, who were ordinarily resident in tbe Auckland province. Candidates must not be more than 18 years of age, and the annual value of the scholarships shall not be less than £75. Each scholarship shall be for three years, with provision for extending the term for a further year, upon a report from the Professorial Board. Besides having passed the matriculation examination candidates will be required to sit for an examination of a general character in English and mathematics, and to give evidence of their .viva voce powers in the use of the English language.
