I CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. i A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held, on Wednesday evening. The president, ilr. C. Garlick", extended a hearty welcome to Mr. E. D. McLennan, member for Franklin, and eulogised the good work that Mr. McLennan had j done in the past to assist the Papakura chamber. 1 Mr. McLennan, in replying, said that Ihe considered the district "of which PapaI kura was the centre was at the present j time making a great forward move, which was justified by the great progress that was going on in the Karaka, C'levedon., Hunua, Ardmore. and surrounding districts. The speaker considered that all could look forward to substantial progress in the township of Papakura, as its geogTaphieal position j lent itself to being centre. j In the course of discussion about the j running of trains, Mr. Rea suggested that the duplicate line between Papakura and Auckland be hastened, as never I would there be a sufficient and satis- | factory service until the duplication was ! accomplished. i The chamber could not see why the train could not leave Auckland* five minutes earlier, thereby enabling them Ito come right through to Papakura, I instead of waiting at Takanini. Mr. I McEntee mentioned that the Papatoetop, I Manurewa and Papakura Town Boards' J were sending deputations to wait on the I Prime Minister re hastening the duplicaI tion of the main trunk from Papakura :to Auckland. Mr. E. D. MrLennaii menj tioned that he had urged the duplication jof this line on the Prime Minister, who I had stated that the eastern railway would have to be done first, and that he had no doubt that the duplication to Papakura would be p Ut through later on. On a remit from the Papakura executive "That the District Traffic Manager lie asked to provide better accommodation for unloading poods at Papakuni railway siding, and a light be provided jat cattle loading yards." it was resolved ■ that the matter lie referred bark to tlio j executive for action to be taken, and also that the Railway Department ha j asked to lijrlit up the e.\its from tiie I platform to tlio road. Mr. E. 1). McLennan stated that lie had received a nouficatioti of the cliami bor's request for a new Court House. ■and he would that a serond constable be appointed to this district. He moved a resolution in this dimtion which was seconded by Mr. UK "■'.':' and carried.
