Kose. the New Zealand champion, defeated Lloyd Halm by two yards in their third test rare, over one"mile to-night. Eight thousand people cheered the two men over the last lan. and at the finish there was a scene of the greatest enthusiasm. The New Zealandcr ran his own race and put up the fast time of 4.19 1-5, on a heavy track. Kcse went ahead in the first few paces and was immediately in his stride, while Hahn, who held close to him, did not appear to be moving so freely over the first quarter. Hahivs time was 62s and he was still a yard behind. Although the second quarter was run at a slower pace Kose increased his lead to about, two and a-half yards. The half-mile was covered in 2.0. Half-way through the third lap Rose and Halm* caught the tail end of the handicap field. Three-quarters of a mile took ;!.19. Then Rose began to move on. The leading handicap runner was caught i>o yards further on. Rose increased his lead from the American by a few feet.

About 120 yards from homo the American made a magnificent burst and in about 30 (races drew level. Fifty yards from the tape Hahn appeared to in- a fraction in front. Rose had plenty in reserve.
