DENGUE FEVER.
THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBREAK. ■WILL IT SPREAD? (Received 12 noon.) SYDNEY, this day. The recent prevalence of dengue fever in Northern New South Wales and Queensland has caused some consternation and has raised the question of its spreading to other parts of the Commonwealth and elsewhere. Medical opinion mostly negatives the fears of the disease taking hold outside the tropical and sub-tropical areas, and points out that the type of mosquito responsible for carrying- dengue has not been located south of Newcastle, though other more common types have been exceptionally prevalent and troublesome during the present year, and are almost a scourge in many districts.
At the ladies' swimming championships on Saturday, one Queensland representaI tive who recently suffered from densrue collapsed after gome )50 yards and had to retire.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) NO FEARS FOR AUCKLAND. Medical men questioned on the matter to-day expressed the opinion that there is no dancer of dengue fever invadini? New Zealand, as it was a tropical or sub-tropical disease, the conditions for which did not exist in this country.
