OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Otahuhu Borough Council met last evening, there being present: the Mayor (Mr. K. B. Todd), Messrs. T. Clements. C. Civil, J. W. Yv'hyte, C. R. Petrie, C. Arlington, H. J. Hall, T. Whiteley, and J. 1-aine. Drainage.—A letter was received from the Railway Department stating that the council's plan for drainage in connection with the Railway Department's dwellings in -Nikau -Street meets with the Department's approval. The borough engineer is to be notified to prepare plans and specifications, for calling tenders, together with the drainage of the Hokonui Estate. Arising out of the discussion, it was resolved to request the sanitary inspector to inspect the existing drain in Nikau Street with a view of mitigating the nuisance. War Memorial.—Some time ago an anonymous person informed the council that he wished to erect a war memorial nest to the Nixon Monument. He had been in communication with an English firm, hut has not yet reached finality in regard to design. Cattle Route.—Father Skinner wrote re the danger to children attending the Convent School in Church Street, on account of cattle being driven there. The ouncil resolved to alter the route for the time being along Fairburn Road. Hutton and Luke Streets, thence Faninure Road. Disposalof Land. —Some time ago. at the instigation of the Ratepayers' Association, the council communicated with the owners of the triangular piece of land on the corner of Panrnure and the Great South Roads, with a view of purchase. A reply to hand state' that the property was not for sale, as the owners had a scheme of utilising the land at an early date. Building Permits.—Te building and sanitary inspector reported that from the 12th to the 24th of the present month the value of permits granted amounted 'to £4062 for building and "£262 for plumbing, fees £17 17s. He suggested that a new building area be created, similar in detail to the Station Road area.'to. embrace all parts of the borough where concrete roading is being or has been carried out: also, that the new area include Mangere and Panmure Roads. This was referred to tlie Works Committee. He also reported that there have been no cases of infectious diseases since November 28. Electric Lighting.—The chairman of the Works Committee reported that he had been advised that the Power Board intends to proceed with the electric lighting of the borough next week, and that two trial lights would be installed in a day or two. Borough Ranger.—Owing to the Increasing number of cattle and horses being -seen on the roads, despite the fact that a ranger is paid the sum of £.">0 per year, it was resolved to dispense with the ranger's services, the work of keeping the roads clear of cattle and horses to be left in the hands of the borough employees.
