TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
At the monthly meeting of the Auckland.'Trades and Labour Council, held on Thursday, the question of the Arbitration Court's representative was again discussed, and the secretary web asked for an explanation re the" telegram that was sent. It was decided that the secretary's explanation be accepted that 1 he 1 acted as a private individual. A' letter was received from the Auckland Trades Unions Secretaries' Association stated that the Auckland office of the eDepartment of Labour in pointing out the opportunities for boya under the Apprentices Act advised, parents to register their boys at their office for trades. The Department also stated that the applications received so far relate to the following trades: Bricklaying, five boys; carpentry, 16; engineering, electrical and general, eight; printing, four; and sign-writing, three. Some of the boys have already been placed with the employers who have stated their requirements to ;the Department, and others would be accomodpted as vacancies are notified. The association after considering the above, recommends your council to publicly advise parents that the propaganda of the department in many respects was misleading, and such trades as engineering, electrical, motor, plumbing and signWriting, already Lave their complement of apprentices, and suggest parents make full inquiries before placing their boya for these trades. The council, after consideration, endorsed, the letter with a special appeal to parents to go into the matter of the trades mentioned to safeguard the interest of the boys who desire to learn same. > The matter of the migration conference that is at present being held in Wellington, and the action of the executive "in suggesting that the federation be represented at that conference, was endorsed by the council. It w.as decided, in view of the present publications dealing with the Court's representative, to publish the following resolutions: "That in the light of recent public criticism of national organisations of Labour and members of the Labour movement, we strongly advise all unions to support Mr. Monteith for workerfe' representative.". Also: "That this council strenuously deprecates, the regrettable tactics that have been indulged in in the present election of the workers' representative as not conducive to the advancement of the cause of Labour."
