At Kaitaia.

For the 27 miles run from Mangonui to Kaitaia the country is of a most interesting nature. Undoubtedly paspalum has made this country up here. It is great feed and appears to be spreading in every direction. One of the popular sayings in this particular part of the North is that "paspalum and Allen Bell have made the Northland." Be that as it may, there are many evidences of the good work of both. Sheep do well up here, and much danthonia is to be seen on the hilly parts. The Peria district is one of the richest in Mangonui County, and all the way to Kaitaia similar conditions prevailed. At the latter rising and flourishing township, which is within half a mile of the great Kaitaia swamp, the party arrived at 6 p.m., and were given a very hearty welcome by a large gathering of citizens.
