IMPROVED CONDITIONS. CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. N.Z. ADMINISTRATION. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Co-pyrlgat.) (Received 2.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Andrew Thomson, director of the Apia Observatory, is in Melbourne. In regard to the question of meteorological coordination between Australia, New Zealand and Samoa, he says Western Samoa is under British control, and under the administration of the New Zealand Government has changed greatly in character, and since the depression in 10-21 the western areas have developed readily, the former large German plantationrealising profits of more than £25,000 yearly. Last year the poDulation increased by over 1000. This" was due to improved medical treatment and the assistance of Dr. R. Roberts, wife of the American Consul, and Dr. Mabel Christie. Both these women doctors visit the villages. There are now more than 250 native nurses scattered throughout the islands. (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
