PAY OF CLERGY.
SUGGESTED ALTERATIONS. POOR MEN MAY BENEFIT. LOXDOX, January 31. With the object of avoiding what is regarded as unfair taxation, reductions are likely to be made in the stipends of the Archbishop of ("anterbury 'from £15.000 to £5000), the Archbishop of York- (£IO.OOO to £30O0>. the Bishop of London (£IO,OOO to £3330), the Bishop of Durham i£.7o<X) to £233!)). the Bishop of Winchester (£BSOO to £216fii. These reductions will he proposed at the Church Assembly, which is to open in London on February S. The dignitaries at present pay income tax and super-taxes on their full stipends, from which they meet church expenses as well as personal expenses. It is also to be proposed that the archbishops shall have pensions of £1500, the three bishops named pensions of £1000.. and others £800. Toward the cost of these they will, if the scheme is approved, pay 3A per cent of their stipends. The scheme also provides for better pay for the poorer clergy.— lA. and N.Z.)
